How effective is online education compared to face-to-face college? Many people think face-to-face education is superior because they see people and learn directly from them. However, according to data from the Council for Independent Higher Education, only 47% of students report that a face-to-face encounter makes a big difference in their college experience.
The average student spends 7 hours in a classroom, 40 hours in lecture, and 2 hours doing a lab. Students who take classes by mail also report spending 2 hours more in class than those who do not. However, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, 56% of college students receive support from friends and family when they need help. Whether the students benefit from the additional time spent learning from them is open to question, however.
The real benefit, according to survey data from the Department of Education, is the interaction with the professors. Nearly 90% of students reported a positive experience when they had face-to-face encounters with their professors. Furthermore, 74% reported receiving assistance from their professors, and 56% reported directly communicating with a professor. Whether these interactions are worth the extra effort is up for debate, but the data do not support the idea that face-to-face encounters do not make much of a difference.
Online education is often promoted as superior to face-to-face. That is because no one can hide from their face-to-face educator. A face-to-face encounter can be advantageous when students are unable to interact with their professors. The cost of distance learning has made it accessible to students who cannot afford a traditional college education.
However, according to survey data from the National Education Association, only 46% of online college students report that their college experience was a good one. Also, only 35% of them rate their university professors as excellent, and 46% say their university experience is not that great. Regardless of the benefits that online institutions offer, even they admit that their face-to-face encounters cannot hide from it.
Students who receive online support from a professional can also access a counselor, librarian, or other support people 24 hours a day. Many colleges have the technology to ensure that. Also, students with disabilities can always contact the support person 24 hours a day. These facilities, however, are not easily accessible from the office.
What we all need, though, is somebody who is trained to look after our health. We need a professional to look after our physical well-being, who is trained to make us feel loved. That professional needs to be equipped with time to spend in our presence. As the data suggests, only 32% of online students have had the chance to interact with a faculty member in person.
Moreover, only 26% of students have been to an on-campus location. Even fewer have the chance to interact with an in-house support person. We have to realize that being around technology is not the same as being around real people. I know. I am one of them.
Finally, we need to remember that there is an emotional cost to being passed over on the corporate ladder. It makes us angry. It hurts. It is hard to live with. But we have to accept that as a part of the corporate world. It happens to every single corporation. And we must be strong enough to deal with it. It can happen to any organization.
Most of the time, it doesn’t affect the bottom line. In fact, in my own company, technology has become a part of the process, just as it should be. But the fact that it happened to me is something I have to be aware of. We have to fight against that knowledge to maintain our humanity.
I am certain that some of you are thinking that this article is over specious. Well, I must admit that. But I believe it is important to see what the data say about on-campus and online students. These numbers are still not being tracked in many parts of the world. This is why I believe that online and on-campus students should be tracked separately. And I hope that the ITU will eventually track them both.
It can make things much more transparent, and it can help change attitudes about the need for online and on-campus students to integrate. It can help change the mindsets that some have when it comes to on-campus and online students. It can help them understand how connected they are to their students in other parts of the world. But I believe it is vital that they track the two separately.
I have to confess that I have a bias for the on-campus student. It has nothing to do with preference. It is not an ethnic preference. It is not connected to geographical location. It is not connected to the institution’s budget. It is purely a data analysis and a spreadsheet-driven decision.
I have always considered the on-campus students more ‘students’. It is a term that I use to define students from the institution. Those who are physically located in the host institution and its vicinity. It is not about them. It is about the institution. And it has nothing to do with them.
When I am talking about students, I am not talking about my students. I am talking about students from all institutions and all countries. The on-campus students are just one part of the total student. The total student is made up of all the students who attend the institution.
What I am trying to say is that students who are connected have a far deeper connection to the institution than those students who are not connected. That is why they are more integrated. Not necessarily technically connected. They may not have the facilities or the technology and books and labs but they are integrated into the institution. They feel part of the institution. And that is why they take pride in their institution.
The word ‘integrated’ can be defined in many ways. I like to use it in the connection to something which has taken time to integrate. Where other parts of the thing may not yet be integrated. But it is important to understand the concept of integration. It is the ability to achieve something. To succeed. To be successful. It is becoming successful through effort and struggle. An integration that has been achieved. Something is achieved through effort and struggle. Something being integrated.
All that I have said above is true. All that I have said about institutions of learning is true. It is an institution of learning that integrates you. It is integrated into your life and your life into its life. It is part of you and you are part of its life. It is integrated.
If you ever take a close look at any part of your life, then you will see and understand that there are institutions of learning that do not even come close to integrating your life and all its processes. Which process? That’s right. The process of your life. And you thought that institutions of learning were enlightened institutions of enlightenment.
Enlightened to think that your life and your life’s processes could be isolated, analyzed, refined, summed and then integrated. What more could any enlightened institution of learning ask for? It is not really a question for the institutions of learning that are not integrated into you. But for you that do strive to be integrated.
That integration is not found in any institutions of learning; it is proved by the fact that, if your life and your life process are integrated, then you are taking care of every institution of learning that is not integrated into you. You eliminate every mess that has been created in your life, by integrating and summarizing all the processes.
You do not seek to recreate any institution of learning that has been destroyed through the processes of development and empowerment. Because that integration is a process that has been created by you, by using processes of empowerment and empowerment.
To sum up. It is not just a question of you being integrated into any institution of learning. You are empowered to be integrated into an institution of learning. If you are empowered to be integrated, then any mess has been eliminated and destroyed completely. The institution of learning will then be safe and will in fact be the provider of the solution to all the issues in your life.
